Romanian Strongman | Gura Humorului | Active since 2017
Active athlete
Marcel Mihai Manoliu, known in strength sports as “Talanu”, is a Romanian strongman from Gura Humorului, Suceava. He began strongman in 2017 at the age of 37 and went on to build a competitive career that includes back-to-back wins at Strongman Carei in 2018 and 2019, international participation, and a return to the modern circuit with a podium finish at Urban StrongFest 2025. His profile is defined by maximal strength, classic strongman events, and a remarkable set of personal strength performances.
Marcel Mihai Manoliu, born on 2 November 1980 in Suceava County, is a Romanian strongman from Gura Humorului, Suceava. Known in strength sports as “Talanu”, he built his sporting identity around maximal strength and events that demand more than raw power: technique, endurance, coordination and the ability to handle unusual objects and very heavy loads.
According to his own account, Marcel began practicing strongman in 2017 at the age of 37. His entry into the sport is noteworthy precisely because of the age at which he started. Rather than treating age as a barrier, he turned accumulated strength and experience into a starting point for competition.
At his first competition, held in Mamaia in 2018, Marcel competed in a field of nine athletes and finished fourth, weighing approximately 103 kg. The debut was followed almost immediately by an important victory in Carei, in an international strongman contest involving athletes from several countries.
The 11th edition of Strongman Carei, held in August 2018, featured 14 athletes from Romania, Hungary, Lebanon and the Republic of Moldova. The contest included five events: a 120 kg inclined log roll, car squats, 300 and 400 kg tyre rolls, a 10-metre carry with weights from 140 to 200 kg, and a 140 kg natural stone-to-shoulder event.
Marcel Manoliu scored the highest total and won the competition ahead of Sucman Rodion of Moldova and Juhász Péter of Hungary. The victory was one of the first independently documented confirmations of his level in strongman and came in an international setting rather than a purely local contest.
During the same early phase of his career, Marcel also competed in a Bucharest strongman contest organized by Mircea Pîrjol, where, according to the athlete’s own account, he finished second. The result belongs to the series of important placings that marked his rapid transition from newcomer to an established competitor on the Romanian strongman scene.
On 3 August 2019, Marcel returned to Strongman Carei and won the competition again. The 12th edition featured 10 competitors from Romania, Hungary and the Republic of Moldova and consisted of five events: 300 and 400 kg tyre rolls, a car deadlift involving a vehicle of about 1.5 tonnes, Log Lift with a log up to 150–160 kg, Conan’s Wheel with 250–300 kg, and Atlas Stones, with 140, 150 and 160 kg river stones lifted onto a 110 cm platform.
Marcel Manoliu, representing Gura Humorului, Romania, finished first ahead of Kovács Zoltán of Szolnok, Hungary, and Robert Marian of Bucharest. It was his second consecutive Strongman Carei victory, confirmed by local reporting and by modern international strongman databases.
In September 2019, Marcel states that he organized a strongman competition in Gura Humorului. The event brought together athletes from different parts of Romania as well as competitors from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Marcel therefore took on a role beyond that of a competitor, contributing to the organization and promotion of strongman in his home area.
There is also a publicly available video record titled “Strongman Gura Humorului 2019 - Marcel Manoliu”, which documents his strongman activity from that period and adds a visual piece to the archive of his career.
In his own biographical account, Marcel mentions participation in strongman events in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Hungary. The exact results for each appearance are not documented strongly enough in independent public sources to present them as official placings in this profile, but they form part of the international path he describes for 2018–2019.
Marcel Mihai Manoliu appeared on season 9 of the television show “Românii au talent”, where he presented a strongman performance. The appearance brought strength sport to a very broad national audience, and the performance remains available in the official PRO TV archive.
From a sporting perspective, the appearance is relevant because it is one of the most visible television appearances of a Romanian strongman of his generation and helped bring the discipline closer to the general public.
After a period without consistent public results in the major international databases, Marcel returned to the modern competition circuit at Urban StrongFest 2025 in Bucharest. In a field of 11 athletes, he finished third with 65 points, behind Emanuel Pescari and Robert Marian Topîrceanu.
The 2025 podium is important in the chronology of his career because the return was not symbolic: Marcel came back directly into the podium positions in a modern strongman contest.
In July 2026, Marcel competed at the first Rebellion Strength Festival in Timișoara, an international strength festival combining strongman, powerlifting and armwrestling. In the strongman contest, Marcel placed 8th out of 11 athletes.
Strongman Archives records his event-by-event performances: four Atlas Stones from the 120–200 kg run in 38.15 seconds, a Sandbag Steeplechase with 140 and 160 kg bags in 48.73 seconds, Car Walk in 48.46 seconds, Car Deadlift with 400 kg for 8 repetitions, Frame Carry for 6.3 metres, and an Overhead Medley completed with four objects, including a 140 kg Axle, 100 kg Dumbbell, 140 kg Yoke and 100 kg Block, in 50.38 seconds.
At the festival, Marcel placed fourth in the Overhead Medley, sixth in Atlas Stones, sixth in Car Deadlift and seventh in Frame Carry. These results show a profile well suited to classic strongman events, especially those combining static strength and overhead work with non-standard implements.
The personal performances supplied by Marcel portray a strength athlete strongly oriented toward absolute strength: a 400 kg squat for one repetition, 300 kg squat for 10 repetitions, a 370 kg deadlift, a 255 kg bench press, a 180 kg Log Press, a 110 kg Giant Dumbbell, a 145 kg Block Press, a 170 kg natural stone to shoulder and a 180 kg Atlas Stone.
These figures are presented primarily as personal performances recorded in the athlete profile. Where independent public confirmation exists, the result is treated separately in the competition chronology. In 2026, for example, Strongman Archives confirms 400 kg for 8 reps on Car Deadlift at Rebellion Strength Festival, which is distinct from the athlete’s reported 400 kg one-rep squat.
Marcel Manoliu’s career stands out in Romanian strongman. He started at 37, quickly reached major international victories at Carei, helped organize a strongman event in Gura Humorului, became known to a much wider audience through “Românii au talent”, and, after a period outside the modern international databases, returned in 2025 with a podium and continued competing in 2026.
Taken as a whole, his profile is that of a strongman built around raw strength, experience and unusual competitive longevity. From logs and stones to tyres, car deadlifts and overhead medleys, his career reflects the essence of the discipline: the ability to produce force in very different contexts and turn physical strength into competitive performance.
2018 – Strongman Carei XI: 1st place; 2019 – Strongman Carei XII: 1st place; 2025 – Urban StrongFest, Bucharest: 3rd of 11; 2026 – Rebellion Strength Festival, Timișoara: 8th of 11. At Rebellion Strength Festival 2026, his event results included 4th in the Overhead Medley, 6th in Atlas Stones, 6th in Car Deadlift and 400 kg x 8 in the Car Deadlift.
Marcel Manoliu occupies an interesting place in the recent history of Romanian strongman. His publicly documented career stretches from regional and international competitions in 2018–2019 to a return in a new generation of contests in 2025–2026. His results, video material and strength performances provide substantial reference points for preserving his career as part of the historical archive of Romanian strongman.
