Brian Shaw

The Gigantor · four-time World's Strongest Man champion

Retired athlete

Brian Shaw is one of the most decorated strongmen of all time: four World's Strongest Man titles, three Arnold Strongman Classic victories, 16 World's Strongest Man appearances, 15 consecutive finals and 27 international wins recorded by Strongman Archives. His elite career ran from 2007 through 2023.

The story

1. Identity, childhood and the transition from basketball to strongman

Brian Shaw was born on February 26, 1982, in Fort Lupton, Colorado, United States. He played basketball in high school and at Black Hills State University, while weight training initially served as preparation for team sport. After basketball, Shaw looked for a discipline in which he could test his strength directly. He entered Denver’s Strongest Man and won the competition in 2005, then reached the international level by 2007.

2. International debut and early results

In 2007, Shaw competed at North America’s Strongest Man and the Grand Prix of Khanty-Mansiysk. In 2008 he appeared at the Madison Square Garden Grand Prix, the World Strongman Federation World Cup Belarus and World’s Strongest Man. At Madison Square Garden he completed a 375 kg Max Deadlift, five Axle Press repetitions and finished second in a tire and farmer’s walk medley.

3. 2009: the emergence of a world-class contender

The 2009 season accelerated Shaw’s rise. He finished third at World’s Strongest Man, won the All-American Strongman Challenge, Venice Beach Grand Prix and Sweden Grand Prix, and recorded a Max Axle Press victory at the Romania Grand Prix with 186 kg. He also placed third in Super Yoke and Farmer’s Walk and fourth in Atlas Stones at that contest.

4. 2010: breakthrough on the international circuit

In 2010, Shaw won Giants Live South Africa, Viking Power Challenge, Sweden Grand Prix and the Jón Páll Sigmarsson Classic, while finishing second at World’s Strongest Man. At Giants Live Turkey he won Atlas Stones, car deadlift and Shield Carry. At the Jón Páll Sigmarsson Classic he won Stone Medley, Dumbbell Press and Cart Deadlift.

5. First World’s Strongest Man title: 2011

In 2011 Shaw captured his first World’s Strongest Man title in Wingate, North Carolina. In the final he won Atlas Stones with five stones in 19.67 seconds and finished second in Max Deadlift with 435 kg, Truck Pull and Super Yoke. In the same season he won the Arnold Strongman Classic with 46.5 points.

6. Winning WSM again: 2013

At the 2013 World’s Strongest Man in Sanya, China, Shaw won the overall title. In the final he lifted 442.5 kg in Max Deadlift and won Super Yoke in 13.64 seconds, while finishing second in Truck Pull and Atlas Stones. In qualifying he won Atlas Stones, Keg Toss, Fingal’s Fingers and Axle Press.

7. Shaw and the Arnold Strongman Classic

The Arnold Strongman Classic became one of the defining competitions of Shaw’s career. He won the editions in 2011, 2015 and 2017. In 2015 he scored 42.5 points and won Max Deadlift with 507 kg, Bale Tote and Cyr Dumbbell. In 2017 he won Bale Tote, Timber Carry and Max Deadlift with 449 kg, finishing the contest with 47.5 points.

8. 2014–2016: maturity and dominance

During this period Shaw combined world titles with victories at major international contests. He won the 2014 North America’s Strongest Man, Força Bruta in 2013, 2015 and 2016, Arnold Australia in 2015 and America’s Strongest Man in 2016. In 2015 he captured his third World’s Strongest Man title, followed by his fourth in 2016.

9. Deadlift records and different setups

Strongman Archives lists Shaw with 512 kg in Max Hummer Tire Deadlift at the 2014 Arnold Strongman Classic, 507 kg in the same event in 2015, 490 kg in Max 18-inch Deadlift at World’s Ultimate Strongman Dubai 2018 and 463 kg in Max Deadlift at the 2019 Arnold Strongman Classic. These events should not be treated as identical lifts because setup, starting height, bar and tire configuration can substantially change the mechanical demands.

10. 2015: a world title decided on the final event

At the 2015 World’s Strongest Man final, Shaw entered the Atlas Stones in a direct battle with Žydrūnas Savickas. Savickas failed his final stone while Shaw completed his run, giving Shaw the overall victory. Shaw finished first with 53 points, ahead of Savickas on 49.5 and Hafþór Björnsson on 49.

11. 2016: the fourth world title

In 2016 Shaw won his fourth World’s Strongest Man title in Kasane, Botswana. In his group he dominated Atlas Stones, Viking Press, car deadlift, Keg Toss and Truck Pull. At that year’s Arnold Strongman Classic he finished second with 41 points, behind Žydrūnas Savickas.

12. 2017: Arnold Strongman Classic and the WSM battle

In 2017 Shaw won the Arnold Strongman Classic with 47.5 points, dominating Bale Tote, Timber Carry and Max Deadlift. At World’s Strongest Man he finished third. At Arnold Australia he won the overall contest and took first place in Max Deadlift with 440 kg, Frame Carry and Log Lift.

13. 2018: third at WSM and second in WUS Dubai

In 2018 Shaw finished third at World’s Strongest Man and second at the Arnold Strongman Classic. At World’s Ultimate Strongman Dubai he finished second and performed a 490 kg Max 18-inch Deadlift. He also won the Festival des Hommes Forts de Warwick in Canada.

14. 2019: continued world-class competition

In 2019 Shaw finished sixth at World’s Strongest Man. In the final he placed second in Squat Lift with eight repetitions, third in Overhead Medley and fifth in Atlas Stones. At WUS Dubai he finished fourth, while at the Arnold Strongman Classic he placed eighth after withdrawing from Stone to Shoulder.

15. 2020: Shaw Classic and another major victory

In 2020 Shaw won the inaugural Shaw Classic with 47.5 points. At that contest he lifted 472 kg in Max Deadlift and 200 kg in Max Log Lift, won Atlas Stones and finished second in Dumbbell Press. Later that year he finished fifth at World’s Strongest Man, lifting 478.5 kg in the Max Deadlift final.

16. 2021: second at World’s Strongest Man and Shaw Classic

In 2021 Shaw finished second at World’s Strongest Man. He won Keg Toss at 7.75 m, placed third in Atlas Stones and Giant’s Medley and lifted 195 kg in Max Log Lift. At the Shaw Classic he also finished second, completing five stones weighing 159–204 kg in 33.09 seconds and lifting 181 kg in Max Log Lift.

17. 2022: another elite season

In 2022 Shaw finished fourth at World’s Strongest Man. In qualifying he completed seven Log Lift repetitions, placed second in Loading Race and completed four Deadlift Ladder stages in 32.20 seconds. At the Shaw Classic he finished second and won Leg Press with eight repetitions, while placing second in Atlas Stones, Log Lift and Sandbag Toss.

18. 2023: the final major season and Strongest Man on Earth

At World’s Strongest Man 2023, Shaw finished seventh, recording performances including four Atlas Stones in 35.88 seconds and a 32.65-second Bus Pull. Later in 2023 he won Strongest Man on Earth. He placed first in Chest Press and Leg Press, second in Max Deadlift with 476 kg and second in Atlas Stones, closing his competitive career with a major title.

19. Events that define his competitive style

Shaw’s competition record repeatedly features Max Deadlift, Hummer Tire Deadlift, 18-inch Deadlift, Max Log Lift, Atlas Stones, Super Yoke, Farmer’s Walk, Frame Carry, Truck Pull, Keg Toss, Dumbbell Press, Squat Lift, Loading Race and medleys. He was not a specialist in one event. His greatest competitive advantage was the combination of static strength, object strength and the ability to move heavy implements efficiently.

20. Atlas Stones and object strength

Atlas Stones appeared repeatedly among Shaw’s strongest results. Strongman Archives records five stones with a maximum weight of 180 kg in 14.2 seconds at Giants Live Turkey 2010. In 2011 he won the WSM Atlas Stones in 19.67 seconds. At the 2020 Shaw Classic he again won Atlas Stones, completing six stones in 35.68 seconds.

21. Consistency and historical records

One of Shaw’s most remarkable achievements is not a single kilogram lifted, but the length of time he remained relevant. Strongman Archives credits him with 16 World’s Strongest Man appearances, 15 finals and four victories. His 15 consecutive WSM finals from 2009 through 2023 are listed as a historical record, alongside 10 WSM podium finishes.

22. Competitions outside World’s Strongest Man

Beyond WSM, Shaw’s international résumé includes 66 recorded international contests and 27 international victories according to Strongman Archives. Major competitions include Giants Live, Strongman Super Series, Arnold Strongman Classic, Arnold Australia, Força Bruta, North America’s Strongest Man, America’s Strongest Man, Jón Páll Sigmarsson Classic, Viking Power Challenge, All-American Strongman Challenge, World’s Ultimate Strongman and Shaw Classic.

23. Giants Live Turkey 2010: a snapshot of versatility

At Giants Live Turkey 2010, Shaw won Atlas Stones with five stones weighing 120–180 kg in 14.20 seconds, car deadlift with 20 repetitions and Shield Carry over 45.54 m. He also placed fourth in Log Lift and third in Max Axle Press with 195 kg. The result illustrates his combination of static strength, grip strength and carrying ability.

24. World’s Strongest Man 2013: the anatomy of a champion’s performance

In 2013 Shaw did more than win the overall title. He won two decisive final events, Max Deadlift and Super Yoke, while finishing second in Truck Pull and Atlas Stones. Combined with victories in qualifying at Atlas Stones, Keg Toss, Fingal’s Fingers and Axle Press, the performance shows the completeness of his event profile.

25. 2017 Arnold Strongman Classic: multi-event excellence

The 2017 Arnold Strongman Classic is another concise summary of Shaw’s strengths. He won Bale Tote with 710 kg in 14.87 seconds, Timber Carry in 22.48 seconds and Max Deadlift at 449 kg. He also recorded 39 kg in Sandbag Toss and two repetitions in Austrian Oak with 195 kg, finishing with 47.5 points.

26. 2020–2023: competing after the first era of dominance

Another important part of Shaw’s legacy is his ability to remain a top-level competitor as the sport changed around him. He won the inaugural Shaw Classic in 2020, finished runner-up at World’s Strongest Man and Shaw Classic in 2021, finished runner-up again at the Shaw Classic in 2022 and won Strongest Man on Earth in 2023.

27. The legacy of Brian Shaw

Brian Shaw remains one of the central reference points of modern strongman. Four World’s Strongest Man titles, three Arnold Strongman Classic victories, 10 WSM podiums and 15 consecutive WSM finals create an unusually rare combination of peak performance and longevity. His record is therefore not simply that of a champion from one era, but of an athlete who remained relevant across an entire generation of strongman.
